FAQ’s

RainmakerVT lessons and content:

Q: Do I have to be a lawyer to use RainmakerVT?

No. While the language and specific circumstances are geared towards attorneys, the marketing and sales challenges are universal. Anyone marketing or selling anything can use these processes and techniques to establish a valuable market position and brand, attract the right kind of prospects and succeed with networking events, sales calls, and prospect interviews.

Q: Some of the chapters are lessons, while others are simulations. Why is that?

This goes to the difference between education and training. Education is knowledge transfer, which produces conceptual awareness and understanding. Training is the actual (or, in this case, virtual) “doing.” It produces capability and, with practice, real skill. Think of the difference between law school and practicing law. The former allowed you to understand the law; with practice, the latter allowed you to conduct yourself as an effective lawyer and produce the outcome your clients seek.

RainmakerVT lessons are education, through which you’ll learn things such as why PR is more efficient and less expensive than advertising, how to write a marketing plan that’s actually useful, and ten things you’re not doing at your speaking engagements that you should be doing. These don’t require real-time decision-making and so don’t lend themselves to simulation.

Getting confident and comfortable with business development challenges that require interaction with other people, and being able to make quick, correct decisions in real-time, you need to actually do it, not merely hear about it. That’s what the simulations allow you to do – make decisions about what you’ll do or say next, and get immediate coaching when your choice is not the best one. Most importantly, unlike in the real world, where poor decisions or saying the wrong thing can cost you an irreplaceable opportunity or client, in the virtual world a wrong decision has only virtual consequences.

Each simulation also has a “rehearsal” mode that lets you test how well you can perform without coaching or, as we urge, give yourself a quick refresher immediately before applying the skill in the real world, where the consequences are real.

Q: Why do you suggest that I go through the simulations more than once?

Unless you’re a rare prodigy, you probably won’t master a new skill, or even a new way to apply your existing skills, on your first attempt. As the adage suggests, “Practice makes perfect.” The more frequently you practice or rehearse, the sooner you’ll internalize and “own” each capability and be able to rely on it in the real world, where it counts.

RainmakerVT simulations will give you the skills and confidence consistently to make productive sales calls, to win business from competitors, and to set up multiple meetings at every networking event. It’s an invaluable tool that teaches you not only how to do these things effectively, but also enlightens you to all of the counter-productive things you are currently doing.

Q: Can I skip lessons or do it in my own order?

Yes, and no.

Yes: The two main categories, “Getting Found” and “Getting Chosen,” are in logical sequence. You have to get found before you can be chosen (from among those found). Within each category, courses and chapters are organized as predicates. While the system will allow you to open any course or chapter in any order you wish, you’ll likely find it more difficult to understand and apply concepts that assume that you’re already familiar with predicates. To keep the length of each session reasonable, the Getting Found and Getting Chosen processes have been broken up into various courses. Without completing the earlier courses, the later ones may be difficult or impossible to complete.

No: The Toolbox, by contrast, is intended to be your just-in-time resource to deal with the randomness of the business development world. Things happen as they happen, so, as challenges arise, the tool you need is available as you need it.

You can, but it is not recommended for any category other than the Toolbox. Understanding how to get chosen, for example, is not going to be of much use until you have been found by numerous members of your optimal audience.

Q: What if I have an issue that’s not specifically covered?

No one can anticipate every possible marketing and sales situation. That’s why RainmakerVT’s curriculum is designed to help you assimilate a process that can be applied to most other situations. Conversely, we encourage you to submit specific real-life circumstances that are still giving you trouble. New simulations and coaching chapters will regularly be added, and client feedback will play a large role in determining the content.

Q: I’ve been through a simulation three times. Am I ready to go out there?

If you feel comfortable with a particular simulation, try the rehearsal mode. It will contain the same questions from the simulation, but, as in real-life, there will be no virtual coach upon which to rely. You’ll have 20 seconds to answer each question correctly. If you get a question wrong, you must start again from the beginning.

Q: I keep getting stuck on certain questions in the Rehearsal Mode. What should I do?

The Rehearsal Mode should tell you whether or not you have truly incorporated the process for that particular simulation. If you keep getting stuck on certain questions in the virtual world, you’ll likely get stuck on them in real-life. We recommend that you keep repeating the simulation until you can go through the rehearsal in one try.

Q: There is a lot of information in your curriculum. How am I supposed to learn it all?

Professionals tend to focus on learning all the information presented to them as fast as they possibly can. If that’s your goal, you’ll only feel overwhelmed and get discouraged. Our system is designed to provide you with individual building blocks on which you should focus — eliminating all other “moving parts.” When you learn a tactic, first implement it, and then move on to the second tactic, which builds upon the first. When you learn how to create a message that differentiates you from every other lawyer in the country, for example, go and do it. Don’t try to learn how to efficiently communicate that message until you’ve actually created it.

Q: How many times can I view the chapters and are they downloadable?

You can watch and review the chapters as many times as you like while you are a paying member. They are available on-demand wherever you have an internet connection. The videos are not downloadable due to copyright protection and piracy issues.

Q: Is the content available on DVD format?

No, it is not available on DVD.

Q: Can I skip lessons or do it in my own order?

You can, but it is not recommended for any category other than the Toolbox. Understanding how to get chosen, for example, is not going to be of much use until you have been found by numerous members of your optimal audience. Additionally, categories two and three each detail a process that has been broken up into various courses. Without completing the earlier courses, the later ones may be difficult or impossible to complete.

Q: Will you be adding more content?

Yes. We will be continuing to develop and add more content as the program grows and evolves.
